Are You a Leader?

There are many responsibilities upon those who run a company.  One of those key responsibilities is leadership.  Being a good leader is essential to not only the business/employee aspect of your company, but also to your clients.  Let’s take a look at leadership in the workplace today.

What does it mean to be a leader in the workplace? First, we must know what good leadership looks like.  There are tons of aspects to leadership, but a few include communication, vision, preparation, participation, teamwork, responsibility, empowerment, growth, change, respect and celebration.  Good leadership displays the desired actions, communications, attitudes, and flexibility.

Second, leaders must set the example for their team that they want to be seen. If you want your employees to be on time, you should be on time or early.  If you want better communications, make sure your communications are clear, timely, effective and appropriate.

Third, leaders are growers.  Leader’s don’t stay as one individual, with faults and flaws.  Rather, they invest in opportunities to grow themselves personally and professionally.  No one can be perfect, but everyone has room for improvement.  If you were to study some great leaders like John Maxwell, Bob Proctor, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, they will all tell you that they spend time each day learning whether it’s through listening to employee and customer feedback, their mentors, books or seminars.  True leaders are not stagnant.

Finally, if you’re a good leader in the workplace, you know how to work with change.  Change is inevitable.  Whether you’re talking about employees and clients coming and going, old/new software, laws and protocols, or your industry, there will be changes.  Your opportunity as a leader is to learn from mistakes, see change as an opportunity, and be continually looking for ways to improve and grow.  Communication from employees, customer feedback and industry meetings/workshops/seminars will all help you (and the other leaders on your team) see what change is necessary, what change is coming and what changes must be made.
