Today, in honor of the founding of Hershey’s on February 9, 1894, I thought we’d talk about some lessons that can be learned and applied to our businesses (you can learn more about the Hershey story here).
1-sweets sell. Yep, that simple. People like sweet stuff and no matter how many times we get told it’s bad for our teeth we’re still going to indulge.
2-follow your talents. At his second apprenticeship Hershey discovered he was good at candy making; he wasn’t fit to be a quarterback, army commander or corner cop, he was meant to please and pleasure the world with sweet treats.
3-like many companies and entrepreneurs, he failed. Yes, he failed several times in the candy business before finding successes. But he didn’t give up, he kept going because he knew that his industry was a guaranteed moneymaker.
4-attend big events. Hershey attended the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, saw a new chocolate technique, was convinced this was the future of chocolate and sweets and knew he had to jump in then and there, so he did. Big events are great for networking and you might see something that will inspire you as well.
5-he worked on mass production. Chocolate in little bits is delicious, but giving more people the opportunity to experience what you have to offer is always a great option. Yes, you can have exclusive offerings but most people aren’t willing to shell out that kind of money up front, so he created a less expensive option.
6-leave a legacy. Not only did Hershey leave an amazing chocolate legacy that is still being built today, he also formed a school to care for orphans. Community contributions are not only and amazing way to build good will around your company, it also feels good too.
