Leadership for 2016

To start off this year I thought it would be wise to share some leadership insights to help you make this your best year yet.  So if you’re a leader by title or a leader because you’re a parent or just trying to make the world a better place, here are some of my goals and plans to be a better leader this year.

First, leading is about helping others achieve.  As a leader your goal isn’t to look good or improve your lot in life, although that’s usually a side benefit, your real goals are to give credit to those to whom credit is due and unite people to create great accomplishments together.

Second, leading is about being interested in people, not just being interesting.  You’re probably familiar with the well-know leaders like John Wooden, John Maxwell, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher. These people were and are people who have made a name for themselves, not because of who they are or were but because they care about other people, the people they’re leading.

Third, know what to let go.  Yes, we want to gain more in life (and business), but often we have to let go of some of the people and things that we have in order to get to the next level.  You don’t have to be everything to everyone, choose to do only that which you can do best and which bring you the most value and joy in life.

Finally, who says you can’t?  There will be lots of people who have or will tell you that you can’t do what you’re dreaming about doing or trying to create.  Take their words with a grain of salt (don’t completely disregard them) but don’t let them stop you from trying something new, doing things the way they’re not usually done or trying to fulfill your dreams.

So what are your goals and plans as a leader this year?
